Alone
Each lover has a theory of his own
About the difference between the ache
Of being with his love, and being alone:
Why what, when dreaming, is dear flesh and bone
That really stirs the senses, when awake,
Appears a simulacrum of his own.
Narcissus disbelieves in the unknown;
He cannot join his image in the lake
So long as he assumes he is alone. /
W.H.Auden
Could it be that we are only able to experience the sensuous quality of contact with the other in our dreams? Could it be that there is a loss of reality in the real world?
Could it be that we are at peace with ourselves only if we never accept that we are doomed to be alone? Could it be that our imaginations of the other intensify our sense of loneliness?
Could it be that we dance as we run towards the other? Could it be that the dance-as-we-run movement towards the other is no different from the dance-as-we-run movement towards the self? Does the destination make a difference in the permanent theatre of desire?
These are but a few of the questions that the failed yet fertile cross-gender encounters in this video suggest.
